 Ventilation – When and How!
 (RACE 1.25 hrs)

This session will cover the indications for ventilatory support, principles of manual and mechanical ventilation and different modes of ventilation, which can be applied to both patients under anaesthetisa and those needing longer term support in the ICU. The session will describe the process of transitioning the patient onto the ventilator and how to troubleshoot common problems that might be encountered, using monitoring tools such as capnography and spirometry.

Meet the Instructor

Eleanor Haskey, RVN BSc(hons) PGCert VTS(ECC) VPAC A1

Elle graduated from the University of Bristol in 2008 with a BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Nursing. She began her career in a mixed practice in the Midlands before returning to Bristol as a Senior ICU Nurse. During her four years there, she achieved her Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) qualification in Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) in 2012.

In 2013, Elle joined the Royal Veterinary College's Emergency and Critical Care team in London, where she served as both Senior and Head ECC Nurse. In 2019, she completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Education and became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). In 2020, she stepped back from her head nurse role to refocus on clinical work and mentoring students on clinical rotations. In 2023, she transitioned into the anaesthesia team to expand her knowledge and skill set.

Elle is passionate about education and professional development. She has lectured internationally, authored numerous articles, and contributed to book chapters. She is also an active member of the veterinary nursing community, serving on the editorial committee for The Veterinary Nurse, BSAVA Companion and volunteering with the European Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (EVECCS).
