Monique holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Washington State University. She has been in the veterinary profession since 1997, and practicing as a licensed technician since 2002. Monique earned her Veterinary Technician Specialty in Behavior in 2011. A leader within the veterinary behavior community, Monique currently serves as the Past President and Examination & Credentials Approval Committee Chair of the Academy of Veterinary Behavior Technicians. She was named Veterinary Technician of the Year for the USA and Canada by PetPlan in 2015 and VMX Speaker of the Year in 2023.
Monique’s passion for animal-friendly veterinary medicine and preserving the human-animal bond shines in her teaching style. She has extensive experience educating veterinary and animal-care professionals at the symposium, conference, and in-clinic level. An innovative educator, she has designed and presented curriculum used nationwide for the Ceva Behavior Advocate Program and the Fear Free Certified Professionals program in addition to presenting at numerous veterinary continuing education conferences. Monique has authored for industry journals and periodicals, authored numerous textbook chapters. She is also the co-author of the 2018 textbook Cooperative Veterinary Care, with a second edition slated for 2023.
When she is not practicing medicine at Mercer Island Veterinary Clinic, writing, or educating, she loves spending time with her own animals including working sheepdogs, going to the beach, cooking, gardening, and spending quality time with her husband.
