Ice, Ice, Baby: The Hypothermic Patient

Most patients will experience some degree of hypothermia during anesthetic procedures, whether under general anesthesia or sedation.  However, hypothermia can begin prior to the anesthetic event.  Understanding how core body temperature is regulated and how heat loss occurs, will lead to a better understanding of how to prevent hypothermia.

Meet the Instructor

Jennifer Sager, BS, CVT, VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia, ECC)

Jennifer Sager is currently a Regional Nursing Director for VEG, ER for Pets. Prior to her current role she was at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine for 18 years as a Small Animal Hospital Education and Training Specialist and Anesthesia Service Technician and Supervisor. 

Jennifer has a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science from Western Michigan University, and obtained her Veterinary Technology degree in 2003 from St. Petersburg College.  In 2008, Jennifer attained her Veterinary Technician Specialty in Anesthesia and Analgesia, following up with a second Specialty in 2009 in Emergency and Critical Care. 

Jennifer has lectured around the United States on various topics of Anesthesia and Critical Care, has authored several book chapters, and is a trainer for Midmark Animal Health, teaching the fundamentals of anesthesia to private practice clinics. 

Most recently, she contributed to the AAFP Anesthesia Guidelines (2018),  is co-chair of the AAHA 2020 Anesthesia Guidelines and a contributing author to the 2025 American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia Monitoring and Sedation Guidelines.

Jennifer is Past-President of the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia and Analgesia, current Executive Secretary of the AVTAA, and active in both her VTS Academies. 

When not in clinics, Jennifer enjoys running-having just achieved a bucket list race of finishing the Dopey Challenge, camping, the beach and is a self-proposed cat fanatic.
