Meet the Instructor

Jeff Backus, CVT, RVT, VTS(ECC)

Jeff started as a veterinary assistant in general practice in 1995 and began working in ECC in 2004. He became an RVT in 2009 and VTS (ECC) in 2013. Jeff has been a veterinary technician educator for 7 years.

He has served on the Board of Directors for the California RVT Association for 10 years, serving as President from 2020-2022. After 4 years in academia at Tufts University, he relocated back to Southern California with his wife and began working for the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.  You can find him lecturing and speaking at a variety of conferences with a focus on toxicology. 

He co-founded the Vet Tech Café podcast with Dave Cowan in 2019, talking about issues that face the veterinary technician profession with leaders in the field, and highlighting all the amazing opportunities of the veterinary technician profession.

He currently lives in Southern California with his wife, Molly, and toddler daughter, Daphne, who helps keep him young and makes him grow old at the same time, another daughter due in May 2025 and two wild kitties.
