Meet the Instructor
Nicola Lakeman, MSc, BSc(Hons), RVN, CertSAN, CertVNECC, VTS (Nutrition)
Nicola has worked in the veterinary industry since 1994. In 1999 Nicola graduated from Hartpury College with an Honours Degree in Equine Science, specialising in nutrition. She has subsequently gained post-graduation certificates in small and exotic animal nutrition and in emergency critical care. Nicola has gained a Master’s degree in Advanced Veterinary Nursing from Glasgow University.
Nicola was the first ever veterinary nurse to be permitted by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons to hold the role of Practice Principle, a role previously only being allowed to be held by MRCVSs. Nicola has pioneered the role of consulting RVNs in practice, championing this for over 20 years.
Nicola has written textbooks on Companion Animal Nutrition for veterinary nurses and technicians, and The Consulting Veterinary Nurse; a book on nursing clinics and has contributed to several chapters in other texts on nutrition and consulting skills. Nicola is the editor for one of the main textbooks that is used for student nurse training; Aspinall’s Complete Textbook of Veterinary Nursing; and is the Executive Editor for the world leading monthly veterinary nursing scientific journal – The Veterinary Nurse.
Nicola has lectured nationally and internationally both in-person and digitally, including Russia, Eastern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the USA. Nicola was the first veterinary nurse outside of North America to holds the Veterinary Technician Speciality (VTS) in nutrition.
Nicola has won numerous esteemed awards including being awarded the 2024 Bruce Vivash Jones Veterinary Nurse award for outstanding contributions to the advancement of small animal veterinary nursing.
Nicola has held several voluntary roles for representative associations such as BVNA, BVA and BSAVA.
Nicola is an examiner for several award bodies and has helped to develop the post qualification certificate in nutrition for veterinary nurses and surgeons and the Level 5 certificate in nurse consulting.
